Hi there,

Last time we spoke about how brands communicate values in brand strategy.

Today, we'll see how values and beliefs can create a strong story.

When we weave them together, they engage your audience in a meaningful way.

A great product isn't enough. You must connect on a deeper level. That's where storytelling shines.

Why Storytelling Matters

Storytelling is an art; it's stitching your brand's essence into a tapestry. Each thread weaves values, mission, and beliefs into a message that resonates. Authenticity shines through, making connections that linger in memory. For this, I usually use archetypes; it works wonders.

Before we dive into storytelling, let's clear up a common confusion. Many clients and younger colleagues often mix up values and beliefs. All play important roles in a brand's identity and its storytelling.

Values vs. Beliefs: A Tale of Two Wizards

Think of two wizards: Gandalf from Lord of the Rings and Dumbledore from Harry Potter. Both are wise and powerful, right? They share admirable values like courage and compassion. But their beliefs set them apart.

  • Gandalf believes in people’s goodness and hope’s power against darkness. This belief inspires him to rally Middle-earth against Sauron.

  • Dumbledore believes love conquers hate. This shapes his actions, leading him to protect Harry Potter and fight Voldemort.

Values are the foundation; beliefs are the guiding light.

Values can be generic and open to interpretation. Beliefs are specific and rooted in strong conviction. They drive a brand’s actions and define its unique identity.

A 2022 study by the Oxford Character Project found that many UK businesses value collaboration, excellence, creativity, and integrity.

So, if everyone shares these values, how can your brand stand out?

Brand values are important but can lack distinctive magic. As a strategist, I see values like the men of Gondor: noble but not inspiring. Brand beliefs are like the Elves of Lothlórien: enchanting and enduring. Why?

  • Generic values and overused words like "integrity" make it hard to stand out.

  • Values are hard to act on; their meanings can vary, diluting their impact.

  • Values are easy to forget. They do not set your brand apart or inspire your audience.

Brand beliefs are unique characteristics that drive your brand’s story. They shape your actions and resonate with your audience.

This prevalence of common values begs the question: how can your brand stand out and showcase its unique identity? This is where beliefs come into play.

Why Beliefs Matter More

  • Beliefs give a clear framework for decisions. When facing a challenge, a brand can ask, “What would Dumbledore do?”

  • Beliefs help brands stand out. By sharing unique beliefs, brands connect with like-minded customers.

  • Beliefs inspire action. When everyone believes in the brand’s core values, they stay engaged and committed.

From Values to Beliefs: A Transformation

To illustrate the power of beliefs in brand storytelling, let's look at a different example. Think of Luke Skywalker in Star Wars. He starts with values like courage and compassion. But his belief in the Force transforms him into a hero.

Brands can also evolve by moving beyond generic values. This requires introspection and a commitment to act on those beliefs.

The Takeaway:

Values matter, but beliefs are the stars. A brand can tell a strong story by identifying its core beliefs. This helps it stand out and find its unique place in the world.

Nike’s "You Can’t Win, So Win" Campaign: A Storytelling Masterclass

Nike's recent "You Can’t Win, So Win" Super Bowl ad, the first one in 27 years, is a great example of brand storytelling. It taps into the experiences of female athletes, recognizing the pressures they face. The message empowers women to overcome obstacles.

This ad, part of a campaign, resonates because it’s built on a strong belief: the power of sport to break barriers. The narrative showcases diverse female athletes who have defied expectations.

Nike, at its core, embodies the Hero archetype. Its brand story is a classic tale of overcoming challenges. It shows how to push boundaries and achieve victory.

Nike inspires everyone with its famous "Just Do It" slogan. Its campaigns showcase athletes who beat the odds. This message connects with consumers who want to be their best selves. It speaks to those who wish to overcome personal challenges. Even the famous swoosh logo stands for the wing of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. It provides a visual representation of achieving triumph.

According to their official website and Code of Conduct, Nike's core values are:

  • Inspiration: To motivate and uplift its audience.

  • Innovation: To push the boundaries of what is possible in sports and beyond at all times.

  • Authenticity: To be true to its values and mission.

  • Inclusivity: To welcome and embrace everyone, regardless of background or ability.

  • Connectivity: To build a strong community around their brand.

  • Distinctiveness: Stand out from the crowd. Be recognized for a unique identity.

Their actions, products, and communication reflect these values. Their commitment to sustainability shows in their efforts to cut their environmental footprint. They also use recycled materials in their products. Nike’s campaigns show a strong focus on diversity, featuring athletes from many backgrounds.

Nike summarizes its beliefs as follows:

  • The power of sport can change the world. Nike believes sport breaks barriers, inspires hope, and unites people.

  • The brand believes everyone is an athlete. Their tagline, "If you have a body, you are an athlete," shows this idea. They think anyone can reach greatness through sport and physical activity.

  • It drives progress through innovation. They always push boundaries to create better products and experiences for athletes.

  • Nike uses its platform to tackle social issues. The goal is to create a fairer and more sustainable world.

Nike's beliefs drive their actions. They shape their products, campaigns, and community efforts. They are the "why" behind their "what," providing a deeper meaning and purpose to their brand.
